10 Indoor plants that clean the air

23 Oct

Plants are a fundamental part of our lives because they give us the oxygen we need to survive. But today’s life forces us, sometimes, to work in increasingly closed places that do not have room for plants and if there are, they die because we do not have the right conditions in place.

In 1989, the NASA made a list of the plants that are most useful for closed spaces, those that clean the air: they filter toxic gases and produce oxygen and therefore help make those sites more “livable”. They are also easy to maintain because bad conditions do not affect them, on the contrary, they like them. They are able to live in places where there is not much light and the air is not so clean, because of the amount of CO2.

The plants examined

These plants were the ones that reacted best to the tests of NASA scientists. They may be in hostile environments, if they water twice a day.

1.- Bamboo Palm (Chamaedorea seifrizzi): should be placed in the shade or semi shade, withstands low temperatures and requires ambient humidity so that the tips do not dry out. If it is in a dry environment, we must monitor the red spider pests that attack it.

2.- Ficus or Laurel of India (Ficus benjamina): It needs a lot of light, but never expose it directly to the sun, it doesn’t need ambient humidity, just spray its leaves with water when you water it. The ideal temperature is to have it minimum at 55°F in winter and in summer, maximum at 75°F. It should be irrigated once every eight days in winter and only twice a week in summer.

3.- Gerbera Daisy (Gerbera jamesonii):
It is indifferent to the amount of light that comes to it, of course the more exposure, the more flowers. From being in a very humid environment, between 75 and 90% and withstands maximum 77 ° F.

4.- Ivy (Hedera helix): It is a fast-growing climbing plant, so be careful and avoid increasing its size because it will start to invade the entire room. Do not over water and need an environment with a temperature between 53° F and 68° F.

5.- Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemus moriflolium): It must be in a clear and very ventilated place, it does not resist very hot weather so you must be careful with heat or excessive light. It should always be wet, because the flowers wilt immediately when they lack water.

6.- Sansevieria or Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata): You should avoid excessive watering, they should be in good light, but not direct and not in the shade. The temperature cannot go below 34° F and they live in a dry environment.

7.- Spath or Peace Lilies (Spathiphyllum): They bloom in summer, need frequent watering and sprinkling of the leaves. They need a lot of light, but not in direct sunlight.

8.- Janet Craig Plant (Dracaena deremensis): It is irrigated every 15 days, in the period of growth. It does not withstand excess dryness or excess water. It should be in semi shade and the ambient temperature should not fall below 50° F.

9.- Lemon Lime Plant (Dracaena deremensis): It is from warm climate; the temperature should always be between 59° F and 79° F. It needs a constant humid environment, but without water stagnation. During the winter it is watered only to not dry the earth.

10.- Dragon Tree (Dracaena marginata): It should not be exposed to direct sun, it needs high humidity and you have to change the pot every two years.
